Curtiss-Wright Controls Adds Support for VxWorks 6.7, Boosts Multi-Core Performance for Family of Rugged Intel®-based SBCs

SAN DIEGO, CA – October 19, 2009 -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, VXS and CompactPCI products for the Aerospace and Defense market (A&D), has announced the availability of new board support packages (BSPs) for Wind River’s VxWorks 6.7 real-time operating system (RTOS) on its family of Intel® Core™2 Duo L7400, Intel® Core™2 Duo T9400, and Intel® Core™2 Duo SP9300-based single board computers (SBCs). The new VxWorks version 6.7 BSPs, designed for use on Curtiss-Wright Controls’ rugged CompactPCI, VME and VPX SBCs - including the SCP/DCP-1201, SVME/DMV-1901, VPX6-1952, and VPX3-1252, are optimized for multi-core performance.

“Our customers are increasingly turning to multi-core processing for their real-time computing application – both for increased performance and to reduce heat dissipation,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing.  “These new BSPs bring Wind River’s latest version of VxWorks, with enhanced support for multi-core platforms to our family of Intel-based single board computers for rugged deployed systems.”

"Wind River is driving multi-core adoption in the embedded market by providing the most flexible range of multi-core software solutions required by device manufacturers," said Marc Brown, vice president of marketing and strategy, VxWorks Product Division, Wind River. "VxWorks 6.7 reinforces Wind River’s commitment to delivering market-leading multi-core platforms and helping our customers overcome the significant technology obstacles of migrating from their existing designs."

VxWorks 6.7 allows embedded system designers to select the optimal multi-core design configuration to deliver higher performance thresholds while maintaining or reducing the SBC’s power consumption. The new VxWorks 6.7 BSPs optimize the multi-core performance of these Curtiss-Wright Controls’ Intel processor based SBCs with software support for 100% of the boards’ hardware I/O. The BSPs also provide a built-in test (BIT) suite.

About VxWorks 6.7
Wind River VxWorks 6.7 is the market-leading RTOS, which provides small, scalable footprint, high performance, determinism and low latency. VxWorks 6.7 is supported by a rich set of multi-core-aware tools that allow customers to efficiently develop multi-core-based devices, providing new capabilities for configuration, build, debug, and simulation. Wind River Workbench development suite is an Eclipse-based collection of tools for debugging, code analysis and testing designed to accelerate time-to-market for developers building devices. In addition, Workbench On-Chip Debugging Edition provides connectivity between the host development environment and the target device via the JTAG or on-chip debugging interface on the device, enabling more efficient and effective hardware bring-up, firmware development, and device driver and BSP generation.

Additional enhancements provided by VxWorks 6.7 include:

  • Enhancements to SMP support for performance optimizations and CPU core reservation
  • AMP support, including a flexible multi-core loader, and a high-speed zero copy multi-processing IPC (MIPC)
  • Expanded development tools for development, debug, and optimization of SMP and AMP systems on multi-core processors
  • Network offload support, optimized for wire speed packet processing on multi-core processors
  • Hardware optimizations for uni-core and multi-core processors
  • Enhanced capabilities for 4G networking for WiMAX and LTE (Long Term Evolution) applications
