OpenVPX™ is the name adopted by a group of companies that joined together in April 2009 to tackle the issue of a VITA 46/VPX system specification. Open to VITA member companies, the group is composed of embedded military COTS vendors and military system integrators. Curtiss-Wright is a member of the steering committee and also participates in a number of sub-committees.
The founders’ rationale for the creation of OpenVPX was that a VPX system specification could be realized sooner by a group working outside of VITA, as member companies are asked to commit resources to help the group adhere to its rigorous schedule. The stated target for the completion of this specification is Fall 2009.
When OpenVPX was formed Curtiss-Wright also launched a VITA 65 Working Group within the VITA Standards Organization (VSO). This Working Group will be the intended “landing pad” for the VPX System Specification, when completed by OpenVPX. After OpenVPX completes its work, the new VPX System Specification will undergo the regular approval process within VITA.
