PowerMatrix 2x12/4x12 DSP System

The PowerMatrix-2x12 and 4x12 DSP systems are two of the offerings in the PowerMatrix family of fully integrated open-architecture Systems. PowerMatrix-2x12 and 4x12 systems provide developers with an application-software ready multi-processor system with easily customizable I/O. Based on three quad PowerPC boards, two single or dual PowerPC boards, and two 3-slot PMC carrier boards, the PowerMatrix-2x12 and 4x12 systems are ideally suited for applications that require a high level of CPU processing, high memory bandwidth and the ability to capture data from multiple sources.

When tasks such as RADAR processing are handed to the cluster of PowerPC 7447A processors with their Altivec units and 256 MB of private memory, they make short order of the work. As each node on a board is completed with its portion of the work, it can send it to another node on the same board at 800 MB/sec or anywhere in the cluster at 400 MB/sec across the StarFabric backbone.

To feed the processing array, the PowerMatrix-2x12 and 4x12 have two dedicated I/O preprocessors. Each pre-processors has five PMC sites for user I/O PMCs and one or two CPUs running at 1 GHz to preprocess the data before sending it across the 400 MB/sec StarFabric backbone to the processing array. In addition to the nine PMC sites on the two pre-processors boards, the processing array has three additional open PMC sites.
