With the increase of speeds of Ethernet traffic to 10 gigabit per second (10Gbps), 10GbE protocol is rapidly gaining acceptance as a standardized method of sending data between resources in embedded systems. Specifically, due to its ability to transport massive amounts of data and to send this data over long distances, 10GbE has applicability in RADAR systems, sending digital data between the antenna/receiver subsystem(s) and digital signal processors (DSP) which might not be co-located in the same electronics chassis. To assist with 10GbE data capture, replay, and analysis, Curtiss-Wright has designed the SDR1X system.

The SDR1X system records 10GbE data at 800MB/s that is sent from the RADAR sensor interface to the data recorder over fiber optic cable.  While the SDR1X can capture both UDP and TCP data, UDP is the favored protocol for use in streaming sensor-to-DSP applicaction.  Each incoming 10GbE data frame is time-stamped to later support accurate playback and to assist in detailed post analysis of retrieved data.  When not recording 10GbE data, the SDR1X system can playback the data just like it arrived at 800MB/s.  This unique re-play feature is very useful for RADAR simulation and DSP algorithm development.

Incoming data is sourced from a sensor that supports 10GbE protocols and uses an 850nm SFP+ or XFP interface. Data can be transmitted many 100’s of meters via multi-mode fiber optic cable.  While the standard interface is an 850nm transceiver, the SDR1X can support other media options like 1310nm or 1550nm for longer distances.

This SDR1X 10GbE data recorder supports frames of any size including variable length datagrams, typically 100-250KB in size, and a maximum sustained transfer rate of approximately 800MB/s.

The heart of the Vortex SDR1X system is the 3U controller.  The SDR1X controller intergrates the Vortex family recorder software, Fibre Channel interface, and RapidReplay data capture hardware all in a powerful rackmount computing platform.  When combined with a 3U Vortex SBOD subsystem (16 FC disks @ 450GB each = 7.2TB), 2.5 hours of record time is achievable in just 6U total rack height.  The system also supports continuous recording using the disks as circular buffers. When used in this "circular buffer" mode, the system can find the earliest valid data in the recording.  With a Vortex SAN Access Kit running on a customer-provided PC workstation, captured data can be retrieved very quickly for post analysis.

If your application requires more data security, then use one of the two Vortex RAID systems for storage.  The 2U Vortex RAID offers 12 disks capacity.  For more record time, use the 4U Vortex RAID with 48 disk capacity.
